Yooo….big shout out to everyone who came out to the big Sound Powered Mountain Peeps Blowout show on Sunday, July 25th! It was a dope show from beginning to end as we brought the heat all night long! Earsiq Radkeys, Attorneys At Law, Kris Harlow, Made Up Minds, Bullhead*ded, Too Tone Taurus, ChuckCity & J. Blitz (ME), Milogic, iBe Hustles, & Jackie Bond all wrecked shop on stage at The Black Sheep in CO Springs! It was definitely a show worth checking out.

And I meant what I said on stage: every single person who showed up did more for us as artists than we’ve ever done for them. I just hope yall had as much fun rocking out with us as we did on stage, cause I know I had a blast. Yall keep supporting like that, and someday I really will be able to quit my day job. I get real fired up when I see a crowd like that.

Peace,
J. BLUCKA!

P.S.-New J. Blitz album Hard Rock Life Coming soon! Stay Tuned

Just something I wanna say real quick. I know there are a lot of hip-hop heads in the CO where I’m livin right now. Maybe we aren’t getting the word out like we should, but i don’t think the turnout has been matching the level of fans that I know are out here. Now, I’ve never been one to criticize fans, cause I’m a fan myself, and not every little thing is going to be a packed-house sellout.

There are certain MC’s who I’ve always wanted to meet, for different reasons. There are certain cats who I’d want to do a song with. Others I’d like to hang out with and just pick their brain about everything I could think of. Then there’s a small group of MC’s-maybe 15-20 cats total, who I don’t even think I could find the words for-those whom, given the opportunity, I’d simply walk up to, give them a copy of my CD, and say: “Thank you. You helped inspire and influence this, and I hope I made you proud.” Then I’d just walk away. Guru would have been one of those people. Of course there are people better known, whether rightfully or not, for helping to shape hip-hop into something I’ve loved dearly since the first time I heard Run-DMC at my aunt’s in the St. Bernard Projects. But as far as myself personally, there’s a short list of men and women who’ve sent me in the direction I’ve gone in ever since I started writing rhymes in used black-and-white composition noteboks back in the 7th grade. Whether it was sound, style, substance, or swagger(for lack of a better word), I wouldn’t be who I am today had I not played their tapes until they popped, or spent gas money on tickets then had to bum a ride to their shows, or memorized their lyrics till I knew them better than my own. While he never was quite able to put together that single body of work that would earn him a spot in the “G.O.A.T.” Debate, Guru’s legacy can be determined by doing one thing: asking your favorite rappers about him. Very few people in the world of hip-hop have garnered respect across the board-east or west coast, gangster or backpack, pimp or player-as the MC half of Gang Starr.

I remember when he got to the legend level in my book. I’d always liked Gang Starr, but never really followed them. Then one day in freshman year of college, my roomate (whatup P!) came in with a copy of Moment of Truth. I’m not proud of it, but I still owe him a copy, because when freshman year was over, his CD went home with me. Guru blended the grimy and the smooth, the deep and the light, so seamlessly that it all simply seemed like different facets of onne genuine personality. And he could spit. That’s what comes to mind when I think of Guru. I hope that someone thinks of me the same way someday.

Naw, man, I said bourbon on the roc…huh? Oh, what’s hapnin, peoples? Just lettin ya’ll know that the big dog hasn’t forgotten about you. Had a couple dope shows this past week and some change. The Mountain Peeps show up in Denver (9/11/09) went real good, except for one thing. Remember when I said in the other post about the time coming when we might have to put hands on a club owner for welching on the dough? Yeah, yo, I didn’t expect it to come that fast. Fortunately he coughed up the dough, cause even the dude’s own staff had our back, not his. But I won’t get into the details about that. All in all, it was a good night. (check out photos from the night here) Good times…

I also had the privilege of once again performing with The Mystic Roots Band on Sunday 9/13/09. Those cats are some of the coolest dudes I’ve met since I decided to follow this crazy-ass dream of mine. They’re about halfway through their Back To School Tour, and if they’re in your town, and you like reggae, go check them out.

And something I wanna say. I came to a realization:I’m done complaining about hip-hop. Just like everyone else should be. I mean, have you noticed that no one, and I mean no one, seems to be happy wth hip-hop? The intellectuals say it’s gotten too dumb, the thugs say it’s too soft, the underground says it’s too commercial, the radio says it’s too weird, the eccentrics say it’s too boring, the women say it’s too misogynistic, the men say there’s too many songs for the women, etc, etc… Because of this, I’ve resolved to stop complaining about it. Don’t get it twisted. Will I still call out wack MC’s? of course, it’s in my blood. Asking me to stop doing that is like asking a dog to meow. But what I won’t do is feed into the black cloud that hip hop seemed to live under ever since Pac and Biggie died. I can’t listen to Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II or The Ecstatic or Nas’s Untitled and then say “hip-hop sucks” without feeling a bit over-melodramatic. Whatever subgenre you like is out there; you just have to support it. I mean, isn’t this what we wanted in the first place-enough diversity in hip-hop that anyone can find something they like? I’m still a firm believer in the concept that there’s enough room for everybody. There isn’t a single one of us who can dictate what hip-hop should be. Hell, that’s where we got our resolve from in the first place. Remember when no one respected us, when they said it wasn’t music, just noise? Marinate on that for a lil bit.

Peace,

…I can’t think of anything I want to do right now that would make me happier than following this music thing til the end. I know that parts of it will suck, but I look forward to piling in a van with some of my fellow artists and hitting the road. I look forward to 8 people sharing a hotel room and sleeping on the floor, washing my draws in the sink, possibly having to put hands on a club promoter for welching on the money they promised. Maybe I’m odd(don’t answer that), but I look forward to that shit. When I read interviews of my favorite artists, or watch them talk about that kind of stuff on video, I know one thing: no matter how much they hate all that shit, getting on stage and reaching out to a roomful of strangers makes it all worthwhile. Any MC/Singer/Musician with something worth saying will probably agree with me on that.

If the experiences from the smaller shows that I’ve been doing so far is any indication, then I really can’t wait till this really picks up. And I’m not so naive that I don’t realize that there’ll be parts that will make me question my own sanity for trying to do this, but after getting a taste of it, I really can’t see myself doing anything else. This from a dude with a college degree who took the helm of an ad agency when he was 22 and ran it for 3 1/2 years. And I’m well aware of the fact that somewhere along the line one of the posts on this blog will be a frustrated, profanity-laden rant about how much I hate it, but consider this a disclaimer: it’ll take something really awful to get me to give this up. Get jaded, maybe(hell, most likely), but get turned off completely? I just don’t see it.

So bring it on: the barfights, the drunk jailbait(no, you can’t go back to the van with me, but buy this cd–and buy one for your dad too), the cops, the rumble strips on the side of the highway that will probably save us at least once every 30 miles, the $40-a-night motels with used soap in the bathroom that has hair stuck to it, the inevitable arguments that each and every one of us will have with our significant others about “why are you still doing this?” and all the bad stuff too. Long as I can rock some ill shows, sell some CD’s, pay my bills and have enough left over to get back home, then I’m in it for the long haul.

Peace,

Yeah, I did my thing again. Got a chance to rock last night in the opening set for Eyedea and Abilities. The show actually went well, I must say. At first the crowd was a little thin, but once i got into “The Devil’s Playpen” everyone had filled in at the stage. And of course, since it was K-Day(Aug. 29), you know I had to rep N.O. hard. I tell you what, there’s not much I can think of that I love doing more than being onstage with a microphone in my hand. The zone that I go to when I’m really feeling it is more addictive than any drug that man can manufacture. I usually close out with “This Song” (anyone who’s seen it knows why) and it was no different last night. After me came a set from the always impressive Too Tone Taurus (Chebong, I get tired just watching you perform, yo), then Kristoff Krane, whom I’d never heard of before but had my favorite set of the evening. And of course E&A did their thing. All in all, a successful show.

Peace,
